Designing Women is an American television sitcom series about four southern women and one man working together at Sugarbaker & Associates, an interior design firm in Atlanta, Georgia. Julia Sugarbaker (Dixie Carter), is the firm’s president and her sister Suzanne Sugarbaker (Delta Burke), is an ex-beauty queen and the firm’s silent partner. Joining them were head designer Mary Jo Shively (Annie Potts) and the office manager Charlene Frazier (Jean Smart) and rounding out the cast with deliveryman Anthony Bouvier (Meshach Taylor), an accused former prison inmate. Although it was a traditional comedy, the show was very relevant to the times, addressing topics such as homophobia, racism, dating clergy, AIDS, hostile societal attitudes towards the overweight, and spousal abuse.
